Toyota’s New Hybrid Tech

Published by PGI Auto on August 14th, 2013

Toyota has announced the presentation of a new concept, set to happen during a popular auto show next month.  This concept will showcase Toyota’s new hybrid technology from its race-winning Le Mans prototypes, but in a production car platform.

Along with the announcement, Toyota released the first of three teaser images, which depicts the new badge for the automaker’s future performance-oriented hybrid vehicles.

As opposed to the stylized S used on its Hybrid Synergy Drive badge, the new badge is dominated by a stylized R. The letter has become synonymous with racing and we’re left in no doubt of that fact thanks to the subtle checkered flag integrated with the design.

All we know is that the concept debuting in Frankfurt will feature this badge and be called the Toyota Hybrid-R. The automaker isn’t saying whether the Hybrid-R previews a future production model but Toyota has long been rumored to be working on a new hybrid sports car to serve as a successor to its Supra. The rumors heightened when Toyota confirmed plans to develop a new sports car platform with BMW, so perhaps this is what the Hybrid-R concept foreshadows.

The current 2013-spec Toyota TS030 Hybrid prototype features a 530-horsepower 3.4-liter V8, which is paired to an electric motor powered by a super capacitor-based energy storage system.

While Toyota’s production hybrids are expected to stick with batteries for the foreseeable future, engineers have been closely following the development of the TS030 Hybrid in order to improve energy recovery capability, and it’s likely this that will primarily benefit Toyota’s future production hybrids.

We’ll be seeing two more teasers before the reveal of the new Toyota Hybrid-R concept at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show on September 10.

Toyota Camry in Seaside, U.S.’ #1 Sedan

Published by PGI Auto on August 7th, 2013

The Camry has been America’s top-selling car for 11 straight years, even with new cars from Honda, Ford, Nissan and others trying to overtake the best sedan in the U.S.  No other automaker has been able to offer the level of efficiency, safety, performance, value and attractive styling that Toyota has been able to achieve with the new Toyota Camry in Seaside.

“The midsize sedan market is the largest segment in the industry, and we want Toyota to be America’s favorite car — period,” he said at the J.P. Morgan Auto Conference.

Carter conceded that Toyota has raised discounts on the car in an effort to keep sales strong amid intense competition but said most other automakers offer even higher incentives.  Camry sales grew 16% last month to more than 242,000 for the first seven months of the year. The increase widened Camry’s lead over the Accord to more than 24,000. The third-place Altima was 45,000 behind Camry, while Ford’s Fusion was fourth, nearly 61,000 below Camry.

Carter also told the analysts that the stylish and larger all-new Corolla compact will hit showrooms around Labor Day. An eco version will get 42 miles per gallon on the highway, more than the first-generation Toyota Prius gas-electric hybrid. The first Prius, which came out for the 2001 model year, got 41 mpg on the highway.

The Corolla, he said, started Toyota’s reputation for sterling reliability, and the company has sold more than 40 million worldwide. He even poked fun at the current boxy version, which was last updated five years ago and looks old compared with the Ford Focus, Honda Civic and Chevrolet Cruze.

“Out of those 40 million people, no one ever bought a Corolla because they thought they looked good driving it,” Carter said. “That changes at the end of the month with the new Corolla.”

The new car has more interior room than early-generation Camrys, including more back-seat legroom than the current model, Carter said. It also sits lower and has a wider stance for a more athletic look.

Carter also said Toyota plans to have fuel-efficient gas-electric hybrid versions of every model it sells in the 2020s. The company plans a hybrid with electric and hydrogen fuel cell motors in 2015.

California Deems Toyota Hybrids #1

Published by PGI Auto on July 30th, 2013

The Golden State prefer Toyota hybrids over those of any other brand in the highly competitive efficiency arena. In California, approximately 6 out of 10 hybrids sold are Toyota hybrids, which accounts for about 61% of the market share. Despite tougher competition in the hybrid segment, Toyota’s hybrid leadership remains unmatched.

“The hybrid industry has become competitive, but our wide-range of hybrid vehicles continue to deliver high value and strong attributes to both new and loyal customers,” said Bill Fay, group vice president and general manager of Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. “With sales of 5.3 million hybrids globally and over 2 million in the U.S., we the are undisputed leader in hybrid vehicle technology and remain committed to building on our momentum and growing the acceptance of hybrid technology throughout the U.S.”

According to data from one industry analyst company, capturing registration year-to-date through May 2013, Californians bought five times more Toyota hybrids than its nearest competitor, Ford. General Motor’s Chevrolet brand came in third with 6%.

Even more noteworthy, is the fact that Toyota registration data for January through May 2013 shows Californians bought more Toyota hybrids than any Ford passenger car within its entire lineup.

The Toyota Prius in Seaside made its way onto the scene in 2000 and kickstarted the brand’s success in cleaner mobility, reliability and real-world fuel savings. In 2012, Toyota expanded the Prius from one model to four, which continues to bring new buyers into the market.Today, one out of every two hybrids in California carries the Prius name.

Toyota has produced a total of six other hybrid models for the region, including Camry, Highlander and Avalon. Over the past decade, Toyota has sold nearly 1.5 million Prius vehicles in the U.S., and more than 90% are still on the road today.

Globally, Toyota hybrid vehicles have saved around 34 million tons of CO2 emissions polluting the air.  According to date, they have also saved their owners more than 3 billion gallons of gasoline.

Toyota Sees Larger Profits As Quality Inspires Higher Sales

Published by PGI Auto on July 21st, 2013

The Japanese carmaker will soon be making their profit statements for the past few months.  The automaker’s profit has climbed close to 52% to 441.2 billion yen ($4.5 billion) in the quarter ended June, according to the average of four analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg. By comparison, Detroit-based GM reported last week that net income fell 23% to $1.4 billion as European operations continued to post losses.

While Toyota has been losing U.S. market share to Detroit’s resurgent automakers, the profit surge shows how Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s efforts to weaken the yen are benefiting Japanese exporters by bolstering the value of products sold overseas. After four years of battling a recall crisis, strong yen and natural disasters, the maker of the Camry sedan and Prius hybrid is forecasting its highest annual profit in six years.

The weakened Yen have done many favorable things for the U.S.  Most of the Japanese-based brands are now built here in the U.S., dropping their prices and creating thousands of jobs.  Most of the Toyota cars sold in America are built in America.  New Toyota in Seaside and other areas of the peninsula in California are seeing excellent efficiency and reliability ratings.

“Toyota is doing the right things in not trying to increase market share, but trying to raise profit margins,” said Edwin Merner, president of Atlantis Investment Research Corp. in Tokyo. “If volumes were sharply down, like 20 to 30 percent, I would worry.”

Toyota shares have outperformed all major automakers by surging 55% in 2013, adding more than $77 billion in market value, after the yen began declining against other currencies since late last year. The stock is trading at about 10 times projected profits for next year, the highest multiple among the world’s five biggest carmakers. Investors have also become more optimistic on a price-to-sales basis since 2011.
